Facebook Tweaks Tagging and Trending for Pages

In addition to Trending, introduced by Facebook in January, the social media superstore recently tweaked its tagging function for Pages to further help its members find stories and topics that are of interest to them.

With the new change, when a Page (like the one your small business or community organization runs) tags another Page, Facebook's News Feed algorithm now contains code that might cause the first Page to show up in the News Feeds of people who like the tagged page.

Bleacher Report example status update

OK. So that wasn't terribly clear. Let's simplify this with a specific example such as the post below made by the sports news outlet Bleacher Report. They've posted a photo (and link to a video) of NBA stars Dwight Howard, the 2008 NBA Slam Dunk Champion, and James Harden, the 2012 NBA Sixth Man of the Year, doing a few dunks during practice. Since Bleacher Report wisely tagged both Howard and Harden in the post, fans of Howard and Harden might see this Bleacher Report post in their News Feed even though they do not follow Bleacher Report.

Now I know what you're thinking: "Doesn't Facebook already do that? I see posts all the time from people I don't know who have tagged my friends."

That's exactly right. But before now you haven't seen posts from Pages that tagged other Pages. So this is not a big, new change. It's just a tweak to help people find new and interesting Pages that they might want to follow. In the above example, a Howard or Harden fan seeing that post might decide to investigate Bleacher Report and decide to follow that Facebook Page, too.

The Quick Takeaway

When posting status updates on your business or organization Page, tag other Pages directly mentioned in your post. You might just cross-pollinate and pick up a few additional readers or likes along the way.
